It’s almost show time! Market brings throngs of creatives to Atlanta in July for a week of finding fabulous new wares at AmericasMart. This year, in addition to shopping till we drop for Huff Harrington Home, we’ll have a REStyleSOURCE sponsored “Retail Meets Design” vignette and a booth on the new antiques floor of Mart. As Market vets and longtime Atlanta residents, we’ve cobbled together a little guide for out-of-town visitors with, we hope, something for everyone from the first time market goer to the seasoned shopping pro.
Retail Therapy: Where to Shop
Atlanta is home to some fabulous local shops teeming with special little somethings, below are our favorites places by area.
ADAC– The preeminent design center of the Southeast, ADAC houses beautiful showrooms teeming with fabulous designer sources. We head to Schumacher for fabrics and trim whenever we’re putting together a showhouse space. Don’t forget to stop by the Hungry Peach Cafe for the best salads and sandwiches…
Buckhead– whether it’s art, baby essentials or bedding you have your heart set on, look no further than some of our favorite local shops. Baby Braithwaite, Gramercy Fine Linens, Huff Harrington Fine Art and Huff Harrington Home (yes, we’re un peu biased!) are sure to delight the shopper in you.
Westside Provisions District– housing neat local shops like The Preserving Place and chic stores like Calypso St. Barth, this outdoor concept is perfect for a summer afternoon of leisurely shopping and a stop by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Screams for a cone.
Palate Pleasers: Where to Dine
A true joy of traveling is discovering great local restaurants, here are a few to whet your appetite.
Bistro Niko– Our favorite French go-to, Bistro Niko serves delicious dishes in a bustling, fun atmosphere. Conveniently located in Buckhead on Peachtree Road right by plenty of hotels and retail.
Marcel– Who can resist steak frites? Especially when its served in a beautiful banquette style restaurant nestled on the second floor of the cool Westside Provisions District.
BeetleCat– Think upscale 1970s surf shack delivering inventive sea fare in spades. This new gem in the hip Inman Park neighborhood keeps us coming back for the Grilled Octopus and Lobster Roll small plates.
Superica– If you enjoy fresh margaritas and savory selections, Superica is the place to imbibe and enjoy Mex-Tex the Ford Fry way. You can find your fix at their location in Krog Street Market or the brand new space in Buckhead on Roswell Road.
Sweet Dreams: Where to Stay
If you’re not staying in the wonderfully appointed guest room of a friend, these are our go-to suggestions for Atlanta hotels.
Mandarin Oriental– Located in Buckhead right on Peachtree, this five star hotel oozes Southern hospitality with a fabulous spa and gorgeous rooms. It’s a quick walk to the nearby Marta station for an easy ride down to the Mart.
InterContinental– Another option located a stone’s throw from the Peachtree Road Marta station is the InterContinental. Wonderful service and a great night’s sleep will leave you ready for a full day of shopping.
Four Seasons– if you’re looking for luxury in Midtown, the Four Seasons delivers a lovely stay every time.
Cultural Affairs: What to Do
Explore the city in your downtime with our picks.
High Museum of Art– We enjoy taking in the thoughtfully curated visiting exhibits on view and the excellent classic and contemporary permanent collection of the High.
SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion and Film- the museum has two don’t-miss exhibits currently on view; “Grand Divertissement a Versailles” celebrating the vintage photographs of acclaimed fashion photographer Bill Cunningham and “Refined Irreverence,” an exhibition of more than 75 Carolina Herrera designed garments.
Atlanta Botanical Garden– a feast for the eyes, the Botanical Garden is teeming with outdoor inspiration. The spectacular glass art of Dale Chihuly is currently on exhibit in the gardens.
Atlanta BeltLine– grab a water bottle and head out on this bustling bike and pedestrian friendly path that winds through urban Atlanta. Enjoy great scenery and plenty of local eateries, shops and more while strolling the BeltLine.
To get around, we swear by Uber to deliver us from point A to point B swiftly and conveniently. If you are staying near a Marta station, consider breezing down to Mart using Atlanta’s trusty public transportation system.
We love Atlanta, and hope you will too! And tell us, what are your favorite Atlanta musts?
PS Our Aha moment this week: With unsettling events surrounding us, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the wonderful people we work with everyday: Our clients, our vendors and our dearest “Huffington” extended family. Thank you.
