Hot on the heels of finishing our big landscape project at The Nest, I’m still consumed with all things outdoor – and that includes plenty of porch inspiration. Our porch acts as a year-round room and it’s one of my favorite spots in our cottage-inspired house.
I love plenty of seating and that means a cozy sofa, occasional chairs and whatever else catches your fancy. Throw in some fun throw pillows (in Sunbrella fabric) and you’re on your way. We found a wonderful willow and wood rocking chair years ago and it has followed us around ever since.
When we were designing the porch, our non-negotiable was that it had to be large enough to accommodate our seating area and a dining area. So, happily, our chunky dark-stained heart pine dining table has a perfect spot with six resident chairs. And we eat outside pretty much from April to October. It’s wonderful – one of the perks of living in Atlanta.
Let there be light:
Lighting is key, too. We have everything on a dimmer so we can set the mood. And I’m crazy about candlelight so hurricane lanterns are dotted around everywhere. We just added a little fire pit and strung cafe lights (also on a dimmer) around it. It looks magical at night.
Hubby had a couple non-negotiables, too: specifically a TV for golf and college football and a fireplace. I fussed about the TV but we compromised by hiding it behind folding doors. And the fireplace is wonderful and means our porch is open for business year-round.
More porch inspiration:
Our dear friend and talented designer, Lisa Mende, pulled this gorgeous little space together to create a colorful, comfortable porch at the Southeastern Designer Showhouse here in Atlanta. Of course you can put original art on your porch!
Whether you’ve got a front porch or a back porch, we wish you many hours of relaxing and enjoying it this summer.
