Poor Mikey. He probably didn’t expect the warm welcome he got from our store last week, just as some of our nice loyal readers are probably not expecting a blog about mosquitoes! But we love the marriage of a good story and a fine product, and this one is about both: Why a nice a nice guy named Mikey, and his lovely wife Momo, came up with the best mosquito repellent ever called Aromaflage and why I, in particular, was excited enough to want to carry it in our store — and even write about it!
I have spent a good deal of my summers on the coast of Maine, where a wonderful memory is often tainted with the buzz of pesky mosquitoes. In fact, these irritating insects have been the most unwelcome guests at family weddings, and curtailed countless daytime activities or dashed all hopes of outdoor entertaining on warm summer evenings. Of course here in Atlanta, we are not immune to mosquitoes either, as is the case anywhere that is warm, humid and not too breezy. I have been looking for a secret weapon for years, and now I think I may have found it.
When adorable Mikey stopped by the store with a few samples of Aromaflage “fragrance with function,” we may have been initially seduced by the pretty packaging and the appealing scents. When he told us that this was an all-natural mosquito repellent that is pleasantly perfumed and works even better than Deep Woods Off (the scent that I’ve previously associated with Maine summers), I was jumping up and down. We have a few family weddings this summer in Maine, and I’m envisioning a sweet smelling secret weapon that will make me the most popular aunt by far!
The story is about a cute couple of Ivy League newlyweds who gave up their day jobs to follow their passion, after a memorable trip to Southeast Asia. There, Mikey and Momo discovered the ancient secret of combining essential oils and natural incense to shield themselves from mosquitoes. They reworked the formulas, tested them favorably against powerful DEET repellents, and developed two distinct scents – spicy and sweet – for their line of candles and body fragrance. And of course, they designed packaging that is as gorgeous as the product is functional.
We Huffingtons are a little picky about the scents in our store, and we don’t always agree on a favorite. But interestingly, we all loved the Aromaflage scents, with some favoring the sweet orange and vanillin found in the white packaging, and others (myself included) preferring the “Wild” hints of spruce, cedarwood and cardamom found in the black package.
We embrace products that are all natural and do not contain harsh chemicals like DEET, Sulfates, Parabens or other nasties. And we love a product that comes with a story, and is born out of passion. But we especially love a product that is functional, pretty and meets a recurring need.
So that’s why I’m excited about the best mosquito repellent ever. Not only will we be traveling to buggy places this summer (and wouldn’t this make a great hostess gift?), but we (happily) have an unusual amount of outdoor weddings to attend. I’m finicky about perfume, and hate any products that aren’t natural. So this one is a natural for me.
Anyone who follows our blog knows that we don’t usually endorse products in a shamefully commercial way. But Aromaflage just seemed to check too many boxes for us to resist. And we love a good story, even when the topic is not very sexy – in fact maybe even a little repelling!
