One of the reasons we love to visit France is that we always come away inspired — by the gorgeous architecture, the beautiful parks, the art in the museums, the antique stores, the shop windows, and even the patisserie displays (not to mention the steady stream of fashionable men and women). In fact, window shopping is such a popular pursuit in France that there’s even a funny little expression for it: Lèche vitrine, which, as unappetizing as it sounds, literally means licking the windows. It’s fair to say that for us, Paris has always been window lickin’ good!
When we were there earlier this year, shopping with Alva ostensibly for antiques, we found our favorite store manager wandering off from time to time, licking the windows of the ubiquitous and beautiful baby stores. We were a little flumoxed by this sudden interest until Alva confessed one evening that her dream was to open a baby section of our new Huff Harrington Home!
“You can’t imagine how many clients come in daily to Huff Harrington Home wishing we offered items for babies,” Alva insisted. “They’re not just looking for thoughtful gifts, they also want our advice about what to buy, wrapped up in a pretty package.”
Hearing this, we thought opening a Baby section at Huff Harrington was a great idea, and only fitting to call it Huff Harrington “Bébé” since the inspiration came from Paris. We mentioned it to our wise and trusted retail consultant, and he acknowledged that a nice little impulse item, like Baby, could be a complementary “pick me up” to our current inventory. After he left the room, Alva turned to us and determinedly announced, “This will NOT be a little impulse purchase: I want to turn Huff Harrington into a destination for all things Bébé!”
We love determination and jumped right on the baby bandwagon along with Alva.
Huff Harrington Bébé was born about two months ago, when we opened the new store. Just like everything else in the store, Bébé blends in among the French antiques, surrounded by art and all the things we love. The only difference is that if you happen to walk by our back room when someone is opening the boxes of baby gifts, toys, and clothes that seem to arrive daily, you’ll hear such happy little shrieks of excitement that you’ll wonder if we haven’t all been reduced to our most infantile states — which is just what we’re hoping for in all of our customers: That Huff Harrington Bébé would bring out the best Bébé in all of us!
Since Alva, with help from Barb and trusted friend Carol, was in charge of buying the products and putting together this section of our store, we’ve asked her for some help in identifying the best gifts for little ones. After all, ’tis the season!
These are great gifts for stocking stuffers, baby showers, aunties, BFF’s and new neighbors. But what about a Grandma gift for that lucky baby who has the most discerning taste? For this one, Alva doesn’t hesitate:
So we may not be Baby Dior on avenue Montaigne in Paris, but we think our Bébé section will keep even the most discerning Grandma happy and entertained. And we say “merci” to Alva for providing us all with the opportunity to do a little happy shrieking when we first open the packages … bringing out the Bébé in all of us.
PS: Alva never stops. Check back with us in a few weeks for our baby registry!
