Lately, we’ve been all things interior design – and we couldn’t be happier about it.
We’ve always loved design – the creativity that goes into it, solving the funny challenges it often presents and very best of all, the fabulous and fun before and afters. Design weaves its way throughout our daily life at the gallery and the store, whether it’s working with other designers on their jobs (choosing art is always so much fun), consulting with our own clients or designing space for a designer showhouse.
At Huff Harrington, it all comes down to this: D-E-S-I-G-N:
D: Dynamic. Our design team, fondly known as the Design Docs, consists of three wonderfully talented (and yes, maybe even a little bossy in the nicest way) gals who can re-arrange furniture, help weed out the dusty and done-for, add a stellar piece of art or two or help put a little shine on for a special event. Sam Jones, Heather Parker and Debbie Callaway are the ladies and they are always up for a challenge.
E: Energetic. One requirement to be a designer at Huff Harrington: you better be able to run like the Energizer Bunny. Our jobs have taken us here, there and everywhere. The first one certainly sounded glamorous: furnish a charming two-bedroom Paris apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Who knew working transatlantically would present such challenges (like transporting bags and bags worth of curtains, wallpaper and fabric in checked luggage – thank you, Delta!) or finding the perfect pair of matching chandeliers and figuring out how to fit them in the back of a tiny trunk. Every job is an adventure and a challenge of the nicest sort.
A London project required Ann and Sam to not only transport a custom rug on the plane but to run around London in a taxi sourcing lamps, shades and accessorizing. They finally pulled up with lamps, shades, pillows and bags of accessories sticking out of the trunk. Another Paris job had the design team up to the wee hours perfecting the ideal shade of griege for a newly painted vintage table – as well as steaming every wrinkle out of gorgeous silk curtains.
S: Sophisticated. As our interior design business grows, we’re honing our identity – we like pretty and sophisticated interiors with a little hint of sparkle. We feel strongly that original art needs to play a strong role in any setting.
I: Innovative. We love thinking out of the box – like placing art in unexpected spots, flipping rooms to make the flow work better (maybe a rarely used dining room would be better as a study?) and adding one-of-a-kind objects that bring originality and personality to a space.
G: Glam. Every room needs a little bit of pretty. ‘Nuff said.
N: Neutral. We can’t help it, we will always love neutrals! But we will also always insist on gorgeous original art, perfectly paired pillows, fun rugs, wallpaper and paint to add the necessary zings of color.
The Design Docs work their magic with us at showhouses, too. Like any job, the showhouses require meticulous planning, sourcing – and making plenty of decisions on the fly at installation time. We’ve been lucky to be invited to design for several Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles-sponsored events. Here’s a peek at some, including the fun guest house we had last August at the Cashiers Designer Showhouse:
And we can’t show too many photos yet from the 2017 Southeastern Designer Showhouse (which was spectacular, by the way) but our outdoor veranda featured all of the things we love: art, some vintage French finds and a fun mix of old and new.
The Design Docs are all about prescribing a fresh approach with a injection of good taste into their interiors. So, if you’re thinking about re-feathering your nest or maybe even replacing a tired sofa or yearning for a new window treatment, give us a buzz or shoot us a note right here. We’re happy to put the Design Docs on call for your interior Rx!
