For years, when we shopped the markets in France, always on a mission to find some fabulous one-of-a-kind furniture and always at high speed, we would feel the tug for beautifully painted crusty old works of art that would haunt us out of the corner one eye, while we were laser focused on finding furniture with the other. We talked about how art has been our true love, and the basis of our business. And although we have always espoused mixing antique furniture with contemporary art, the idea of buying crusty old paintings from unknown artists, as tempting as they have always been, seemed like a luxury or distraction from our principle mission.
Well, we finally came to our senses! With the last few buying trips, we’ve let our passion for art allow us to buy a painting or two whose origins may be unknown, but whose pedigree is the distinctive manner in which it was painted by an accomplished artist many years ago. We now have enough paintings to form a collection which we’ve called “Héritage” (pronounced “Aireetahj”), and given a French accent — because that’s predominantly what it is. The Héritage collection is available on-line, at the gallery and on 1st Dibs.
Some of the works in the Héritage are in great shape and gorgeously preserved. Others need a little TLC … or their age and patina and crustiness contribute to their appeal. Some are portraits that feel like old friends, leading to vivid speculation about their imagined history and provenance. Others are just exquisitely painted oils, pastels, or drawings that tugged at our hearts and needed to come home with us. All were purchased because we loved them and appreciated the strong hand with which they were painted. And we believe a touch of Heritage will add a beautiful collected feel to any tasteful, modern décor.
Welcome to Héritage!
So how do we imagine these little jewels fitting on our walls? Well you know that we are big believers in the mix of high and low, old and new, crusty and shiny, or as we always like to say, lucite and Louis! We believe that a touch of Heritage brings a little soul to every room, just as we did with the porch of the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles gorgeous Show House this past month:
So how do you mix vintage with modern? First off, you only buy what you love, just as we do. Second, you have fun with it, knowing that one will “make the other sing”. And third, you achieve a layered, collected look that adds a little depth and character to a beautiful vignette. Here are some pairings that we would love to have fun with!
Thank you for welcoming Heritage as the newest addition to our gallery family. If you don’t see any crusty old paintings in this collection to make you swoon, we invite you to join us on our next shopping trip to Paris and we’ll help you uncover your own treasures. Just ask these ladies about the art they found on our last shopping trip!
