What a glorious week of painting in Provence with Bethanne Cople! Bethanne is one of our very talented plein air artists who is an equally accomplished and wonderful teacher. With patience and humor, Bethanne weaves into her teaching so many words of wisdom that we could probably write a whole book on it (OK, maybe next year!).
This trip was extraordinary. Inspired by Bethanne (and the beautiful scenery), the artists were so committed to perfecting their craft and capturing the essence of Provence that they painted from morning until night, taking advantage of the longest days of the year to stretch the very last rays of paintable light. And Bethanne is an amazing teacher. She encourages and challenges, listens and counsels, is patient and tireless, filled with humor and wisdom, and completely generous when it comes to sharing her passion for painting.
So it is with Bethanne’s generous permission that we are using this blog to illustrate some of our pictures captioned with her words of wisdom, as we heard them, when she was teaching. Artists and aspiring artists: Listen up! This one’s for you.
There were many many more words of wisdom, and too many to fill this blog. (OK, we’ll do the book!) So we’ll finish this blog with a little pictorial of the fun that we had, together, lovers of art, nature, sun and lavender, gathered together for a week of camaraderie in Provence.
All in all, it was a perfect week of intense painting that took many of our painters way out of their comfort zones and back again, in an intimidating, stimulating and rewarding way. Thanks to Bethanne’s kind and comforting guidance, everyone came away from it exhilarated, challenged and better equipped to see with their eyes and paint with their heart.
In the final words of Bethanne: “Go forth and paint!”
P.S. Aha moment of the week: I’m not a painter but this image, taken from the window of our little Cremant apartment during a sudden rainstorm last evening, has me wanting to take everything I learned from Bethanne and go forth and paint! OK all you artists out there, who wants to paint this?
